Del Mar, about 20 miles north of the airport, is known for the Del Mar Thoroughbred Club and Del Mar Racetrack. Also knows for its beaches and great surf spots. Del Mar is a city unto itself, just north of San Diego and it has a charming little downtown village filled with shops and restaurants. The Beach community of Del Mar near the Powerhouse Park is low key and exactly what you would think a beach community would be like. Locals cruise on their bikes in board shorts and bikinis. Families spend the afternoon building sand castles on the beach. Del Mar accommodations run the gamut from hotels and motels to resorts, vacation rentals and condos.
