The mission of the Museum of Photographic Arts is to inspire, educate and engage the broadest possible audience through the presentation, collection,
and preservation of photography, film and video.
Since its founding in 1983, the Museum of Photographic Arts (MoPA) has been devoted to collecting, conserving and exhibiting the entire spectrum of the photographic medium. MoPA possesses an international reputation of excellence through its presentation of high quality exhibitions, lectures, publications and films. The museum's endeavors consistently address cultural, historical and social issues through its exhibitions and public programs. MoPA is accredited by the American Association of Museums and is a member-supported, private, nonprofit institution. Additional support for museum programs is provided by the City of San Diego under a program managed by its Commission for Arts and Culture, the Community Enhancement Program of the County of San Diego, as well as the California Arts Council and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Annually, MoPA mounts eight to ten major exhibitions that represent the full photographic medium and attracts 120,000 visitors. An active schedule of programs each year enhance the exhibitions with artists, curators, critics, and scholars presenting over 20 lectures, classes, workshops, special presentations and films. MoPA's education programs are developed to encourage students of all ages to appreciate the arts and to help teachers integrate the arts into their curriculum. An additional 14,000 children and their teachers benefit from MoPA's education programs both at the museum and in San Diego area schools, many of which are designated Title I schools. |
